Cervical Cancer Treatment & Screening in Kolkata
Cervical cancer is the one gynaecological cancer with an established, effective screening pathway — Pap smear and HPV testing — and a vaccine that prevents most cases. Dr. Dipanwita Banerjee, an IFCPC IARC certified colposcopist, brings screening, early detection and treatment together under one specialist.
Whatever stage you are at — a routine screening question, an abnormal Pap smear, a confirmed diagnosis, or follow-up after treatment — find your situation below to see how Dr. Banerjee approaches it.
Understanding cervical cancer
Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix and is caused, in the overwhelming majority of cases, by persistent infection with certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It is distinct among gynaecological cancers in India in that it has both a validated routine screening pathway and a preventive vaccine — meaning most cases are, in principle, preventable or detectable at a pre-cancerous stage.
Dr. Banerjee's practice covers the full pathway for cervical cancer: screening interpretation, colposcopy for abnormal results, HPV vaccination guidance, and surgical treatment — including robotic surgery — for confirmed disease.
Cervical cancer care, stage by stage
Cervical cancer is one of the few gynaecological cancers where screening, prevention and treatment are all mapped out in advance. Dr. Banerjee's approach follows this pathway closely — from routine screening in a woman with no symptoms, through to surveillance after treatment is complete.
Screening & HPV Vaccination
Early cervical cell changes rarely cause symptoms, which is exactly why cervical cancer is approached as a screening problem, not a symptom problem. This is the stage most women will only ever need.
Pap Smear & HPV Testing
Interpretation of routine Pap smear and HPV test results, and guidance on how often each should be repeated based on age and prior results.
HPV Vaccination Guidance
Advice on HPV vaccination, including Cervavac, India's domestically produced vaccine, for girls aged 9–26 and, in select cases, up to age 45.
Research-Backed Prevention
Dr. Banerjee served as Site Principal Investigator for the Serum Institute HPV vaccine trial, giving her direct research grounding in HPV prevention.
Colposcopy & Pre-Cancer Treatment
An abnormal screening result does not mean cancer. It means a closer look is needed — and, in most cases, treatment at this stage stops cervical cancer before it ever develops. Read the full colposcopy guide →
Colposcopy-Guided Diagnosis
As an IFCPC IARC certified colposcopist, Dr. Banerjee examines the cervix under magnification to identify exactly where and how severe any pre-cancerous change is.
Biopsy & Grading
Targeted biopsy of any suspicious area, with pathology grading to decide whether the change can be monitored or needs to be treated.
Treating Pre-Cancerous Change
Minor procedures to remove or treat pre-cancerous cervical tissue, done with the aim of preserving the cervix and future fertility wherever possible.
Staging & Surgical Treatment
A confirmed diagnosis moves into staging and a treatment plan built around the cancer's extent, using internationally recognised, evidence-based guidelines.
Staging Workup
Imaging and clinical assessment to determine how far the cancer has spread, which decides whether surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or a combination is appropriate.
Radical & Reconstructive Surgery
Radical hysterectomy and related procedures for confirmed disease, performed to internationally recognised oncologic surgical standards.
Robotic & Minimally Invasive Surgery
Fellowship-trained at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Centre, New York, in robotic surgery for cervical cancer where the case is suitable — offering faster recovery and less surgical trauma than open surgery.
Fertility, Follow-Up & Life After Treatment
Care does not end at surgery. For younger women, fertility is considered from the point of diagnosis; for everyone, structured follow-up continues well beyond treatment.
Oncofertility Counselling
For younger women with early-stage disease, counselling on fertility-sparing surgical options, considered at the time a treatment plan is first made.
Structured Follow-Up
A defined surveillance schedule after treatment to check for recurrence early, when it is most treatable.
Survivorship Support
Ongoing management of treatment side effects and ongoing cervical/pelvic health monitoring as part of long-term survivorship care.
When to see a specialist sooner
Most cervical cell changes are caught by screening long before they cause symptoms. But abnormal vaginal bleeding — between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause — or unusual vaginal discharge should not wait for the next scheduled screening.
If you notice these symptoms, or if a screening test has already come back abnormal, book a consultation rather than waiting them out.
